This project proposes a Music Therapy Centre for Dementia patients in Cromer, North Norfolk. UK cases of Dementia are increasing rapidly given the aging population and soon there will be one million sufferers of the disease in the UK alone. With a lack of cure, the degenerative disease can be detrimental to a patient’s quality of life. This project focuses on the importance of creating thoughtfully considered spaces in dementia environments, as well as reflecting the power of music as a means of enlightening and awakening the patients’ internalised personalities. The design is carefully considered to create a safe and homely experience for dementia patients. It enables them to have a sense of autonomy in the space, which is so important as a lack of control can cause agitation and frustration. The centre creates a fun and playful environment by varying abstracted musical forms that clearly define the different spaces.
